The Evolution of SEO

On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee published the very first website. It wasn’t until 1997, or thereabouts, that anyone uttered the phrase “Search Engine Optimization.” According to leading search engine expert Danny Sullivan, the phrase “Search Engine Optimization” probably came into use in 1997, but webmasters and others who recognized the value of having a site rank highly on a search engine were taking manipulative steps, (keyword stuffing, excessive tagging, spammy backlinks), to get top rankings well before 1997. With no rules to follow, no Penguin or Panda updates…why not?! Much has changed over the years.

What hasn’t changed is the importance of SEO to get good rankings. Right now, in 2015, organic search accounts for 94% of clicks. And according to a 2014 study: On average, 71.33% of searches resulted in a page one Google organic click. Page two and three get only 5.59% of the clicks. On the first page alone, the first five results account for 67.60% of all the clicks and the results from six to 10 account for only 3.73%.
